Spiritual Experience and Everyday Living

Each person has their own idea of what ‘spiritual’ means and therefore, also, what experiences of something spiritual could be like. For some, it can involve sitting cross-legged on top of a mountain in a state of total bliss, although that is an experience I have not had. However, I believe that spiritual experiences can be integral to everyday living.

Think of a time when you smelt the perfume of a rose. At such a time, you may have closed your eyes to immerse yourself in the fragrance more fully and been totally unaware of anything else: no thoughts, no time, nothing but the experience of breathing in the perfume of the rose. Looking into the eyes of a new-born baby can be another time when one is aware of something so deep, so profound. A very simple experience that could happen every day is the first breath of fresh air when one opens a window or steps outside. Each of these events can, for a few seconds or longer, be totally absorbing, and the experience goes beyond anything that could be explained logically.

Perhaps what these events have in common is their depth and inexplicability. Physical sciences alone cannot explain the totality of the experience: there is something more going on. At such a time, we may be going beyond the limits of the laws that govern physical matter and are accessing the finer realms. We know that something beautiful and exquisite has happened and that it has been a wonderful experience.

It could be that, at such times, we are accessing the love and beauty of the spiritual realms. They are not something that is removed from the physical plane of existence, since all levels of life interpenetrate each other. The physical level is within the spiritual and the spiritual is within the physical. It is more a question of which level of life we tune into.

A radio can pick up this or that channel depending on turning a knob or pressing a button. Although much of humanity has predominantly been tuned into the physical level of life, people are becoming increasingly aware of other realms. Through being aware of the beauties and delights of everyday occurrences, like the perfume of a rose or cool, fresh air, it is possible to extend our awareness of other realms and indeed, experience the spiritual. One does not have to be a master to do this. It is possible for ordinary people to realise the spiritual within themselves and all life.

One might ask, ‘Which planet is associated with spiritual experiences?’ Although Neptune is linked with transcending boundaries and the Sun represents our spirit, all of the planets are linked in one way or another to the spiritual dimension within us. Furthermore, just as we are spiritual beings living in a physical body, so too are the planets spiritual beings manifesting in enormous bodies of rock or giant balls of gas. Even in that level of life, the physical and spiritual are closely interwoven. There can be no separation.

After obtaining a first class honours degree in physiology and biochemistry, I went on to complete a doctorate in the purification, analysis and measurement of avian hormones. This led on to further academic research in metabolic hormones and then mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis, which was pursued in industrial research. I then worked on the registration of new drugs for a pharmaceutical company in Germany for ten years.

On returning to England, I retrained as a reflexologist and had a busy practice on the Isle of Wight. During this time, I gained much experience in dealing with the complex problems that people face: physical, emotional and social.Over the course of about 20 years, I had become increasingly interested in spirituality and the deeper meaning of life. It intrigued me why different people have different issues to deal with in life. There had to be a reason for this and if it could be understood, perhaps they would be more able to manage whatever they were facing.
